Safety
Tips
Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your cycling:
 |
FIT
THE BIKE TO THE RIDER... If you ride a mountain
bike you should have a standing clearance of 25mm -
50mm between the top frame tube and your crotch. This
will ensure that your bike is the correct size for your
height and that it is easy to control for safety and
comfortable riding.
|
 |
STEMS
THE BREAKS! The head stem, which supports your handlebars,
is marked with a horizontal line across the middle.
This line should be used as an indicator when raising
the handlebars. If the stem is pulled up beyond this
line it could snap under pressure and lead to serious
injury.

DID
YOU KNOW that under inflated tyres make bike riding
much harder and that over inflated tyres may "blow-out"
on a hot day?
Always
check your tyre pressure before you start on your ride
and especially if you haven't ridden your bike in a
while. The recommended tyre pressure is marked on the
sidewall of the tyres.
If
your bike has quick-release front and rear wheels, you
must ensure that the quick-release levers are always
in the "closed" position facing the front forks and
rear seat stays.

DO
YOU HAVE A BIG HEAD? Is your helmet rocking back
and forth? Is your helmet too tight? Have you had your
head measured for correct fitting? For your safety and
comfort , it may need to have extra padding fitted to
it to give you a snug fit or the straps may need to
be adjusted to the correct tension.
In
the hot summer months we all need protection against
the harmful effects of UV rays. With the new Headliners
Foreign Legion Helmet Cover, you can enjoy a warm summer
day's bike ride in comfort whilst being protected against
sunburn. Also available, special helmet peaks that attach
to your existing helmet.

ALWAYS
BUY your new bike from an authorised R.C.T.A (Retail
Cycle Traders Association) dealer. You will be guaranteed
honest service and sound professional advice.

ON
ROAD RIDING
With
the rider straddling the bike (opposite)
there must be at least one inch clearance
between the top of the tube and the riders
crotch for safe, comfortable riding. This
will enable the rider to put both feet firmly
on the ground in the event that it is necessary
to stop in an emergency.
|
|
OFF
ROAD RIDING
Because
of the rough conditions & frequent necessity
of hopping on and off your bicycle during
off road riding, at least three inches of
clearance between crotch and tube is recommended.
